I am a massive fan of Precure. Seriously. Pretty Cure! They're pretty and cure, lmao.
I started watching it after I finished Ojamajo Doremi. My first season ended up being KiraKira Precure, around when Hugtto was still airing.
I've seen the vast majority of the franchise. I did drop a few seasons (Max Heart and Healin' Good), there are a few I haven't finished (Go! Princess), and then there are a handful I haven't started (Suite, HaCha, Doki). I also haven't seen most of the movies yet. Still, I've watched a lot of Precure.
It's fun, you know? Part slice of life, part action, and even if I will 100% admit that Precure's target demographic is 5 year olds, it's still like, entertaining and well written. It isn't Doremi, which was a show that has more than a few episodes that are intense enough to traumatize five year olds and deals with weirdly heavy topics despite the age range and general happiness of the show. Seriously, there was a picture going around talking about how heavy Doremi was as a series and while it never lies, the show really is 90% happy because it is still a show targeted at small children. Hugtto having the balls to show a birth on screen probably counts as being just as intense, I guess.
Precure is just a cool franchise with stunningly high production values (particularly for a 45-50 ep year long show), cool fights (mostly, fights have been in decline since KiraKira and have not really recovered), and it's just great fun.
My favorite seasons are Fresh Precure (it's kinda ugly though), KiraKira Precure a la Mode (the fights are pretty bad, but the characters and how they interact with each other are fantastic), and I'm really enjoying the current season, Star Detective Precure.
I dunno who would be my favorite Precure character. I really do like Ichika from Kirakira - she fits the general "not the brightest but quite genki" mold of Precure leads, and I already like that type of character, but she's also driven and clever in a way that a lot of the other characters in that role are in the franchise. She has the passion, but she also really develops into someone with a lot of genuine skill at cooking over the course of the show. It's great.
If you wanna get into it, just pick a season that looks interesting, just as long as you don't start on any of the direct sequel seasons:
Otherwise, you can jump in anywhere. Pick the show that looks the most interesting, or pick the cutest character. Have fun, seriously.
I will solidly anti-recommend watching the franchise in production order. In particular, I think Futari wa Precure is a very rough show for its entire run to the point where I'm a bit surprised the franchise survied so long, and I think Max Heart is also not very good. I think Splash Star does everything that Futari wa Precure wanted to do but much better, personally.
Oh yeah, the movies. Precure All Stars DX is a fantastic movie. Simultaneously an amazing entry point that 100% showcases what Precure as a franchise means in the best light, but also a really rough entry point since you won't know any of these characters if it's the first thing you see in the franchise. Most of the rest aren't nearly as good, although I did enjoy the KiraKira movie.
